Viola L. Jacobs

Viola L. Jacobs, 84, formerly of 11 Stearns Road, died at Springside of Pittsfield on Saturday. She had resided there since September 2002. Born in Nassau, N.Y., Feb. 20, 1921, the daughter of Charles A. Calkins Sr. and Alicia L. VanSlyck Calkins, she attended Dalton High School. She was employed at General Electric Co. in Pittsfield from 1938 to 1947; for a time at Crane and Co., and also as a child care aide at the Dalton Community Recreation Association. Mrs. Jacobs was a member of the First Congregational Church of Dalton, the Dalton, Hinsdale and Windsor senior groups and the AARP. She enjoyed traveling and going out with her friends. She was married July 26, 1946, to Richard O. Jacobs, who died Dec. 16, 1974. Mrs. Jacobs leaves three sons, Richard M. Jacobs of Windsor, Charles A. Jacobs of Hinsdale and Francis C. Jacobs of Plymouth; two brothers, Charles A. Calkins Jr. of Ellington, Fla., and Everett R. Calkins of Bradenton, Fla.; nine grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mrs. Viola L. Jacobs will be on Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Dalton with the Rev. Robert R. Kyte, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the East Windsor Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME will be on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department in care of the funeral home at 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
