Ruth Crystal Laliberte

Ruth Crystal Laliberte, 87, of 64 Notch Road died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in North Adams on Aug. 11, 1918, daughter of William L. and Agnes Stranaghan Tangley, she graduated from Drury High School and received her bachelor's degree from the former North Adams State College and her master's degree in physical education from Springfield College. She also studied at Boston University, the University of Wisconsin and New York University. A teacher, Mrs. Laliberte taught in Northfield before joining the North Adams School System in 1940. From 1941 to 1957, she was the women's physical-education teacher at Drury. In 1957, she joined the faculty of North Adams State as a women's physical-education instructor, retiring in 1962 as dean of women. She was a member of First Congregational Church and enjoyed playing bridge. Mrs. Laliberte volunteered at North Adams Public Library and the Northern Berkshire YMCA, and assisted at the American Legion's annual Christmas dinner. Her husband, Col. Lawrence Albert Laliberte, whom she married Dec. 1, 1962, died Sept. 20, 1990. She leaves three step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two stepsons, Lawrence Albert Laliberte II, on Sept. 11, 1988, and William A. Laliberte, on Dec. 25, 2002. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ruth Laliberte, who died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, will be conducted Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at 1 at First Congregational Church in North Adams by the Rev. Jill Graham, pastor. Burial will be private. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to North Adams Public Library in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, CENTRAL CHAPEL, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include three step-grandchildren, Lawrence Albert Laliberte III of Fayson, Vt., Lance D. Laliberte of Bristol, Vt., and Leisa Kelsey of Fairfield, Vt.; six step-great-grandchildren; a niece, Paula Iverson of Hastings, Minn.; a nephew, Peter Tangley of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, May Tangley of Eau Claire, Wis. Two brothers, Sterling Tangley and Kenneth Tangley, and a sister, Gertrude Stanford, are deceased.
