Vivian A. Dupuis

Vivian A. Dupuis, 88, of 93 Johnson St. died Friday at Sweet Brook Care Center in Williamstown. Born in Madison, Wis., on June 11, 1918, the eldest of the eight children of Frederick N. and Anna Holzbower Schmelzer, she attended elementary and high school in Madison. She graduated from the former North Adams State College in 1975 with her bachelor's degree in education. Mrs. Dupuis was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, serving from 1943 to 1945 as a pharmacist's mate. She was then honorably discharged. After receiving her teaching certificate, she taught in local schools, including the former Notre Dame and St. Joseph's schools and Sullivan Elementary School, and at St. Stanislaus Kostka School in Adams, retiring 20 years ago. She was a communicant of Notre Dame du Sacre Couer Church, where she was a member and longtime director of St. Martha's Choir and the Altar Guild. She was a member of Court Margaret of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and crafts. She and her husband, P. Homer Dupuis, were married Jan. 29, 1944, at St. Joseph's Church in New York City. He died on March 21, 1994. She leaves a daughter, Anne L. Doran of Monona, Wis.; two sons, Peter H. Dupuis of Colchester, Vt., and Paul R. Dupuis of Stamford, Vt.; a brother, William Schmelzer of Wisconsin; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Vivian A. Dupuis, who died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 9 a.m. from AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS Funeral Home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, North Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours are Monday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk Team from Sweet Brook Care Center through the funeral home. She also leaves a son-in-law, Michael; a daughter-in-law, Diane; seven grandchildren, Neal Doran, Casey Doran, Meghan Doran, Danielle Dupuis, Erin Dupuis, Matthew Dupuis and Nicole Dupuis; a great-granddaughter, Emma Nichole Dupuis; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as several brothers- and sisters-in-law. She was predeceased by two sisters, Rosemary Dosher and Beatrice Bull, and by four brothers, Donald, David, Thomas and Duane Schmelzer.
