Dorothy May Maher

Dorothy May Maher, 89, a longtime resident of Park Street North, died Tuesday at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Canaan, Conn., where she had been a resident for three years. Born in Great Barrington on Jan. 6, 1917, daughter of Sylvester and Elizabeth Cassidy Bunce, she was a 1936 graduate of the former Searles High School. Mrs. Maher was employed as a machine operator at the former Great Barrington Manufacturing Co. and at Rising Paper Co., retiring in 1979. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and art. Her husband, William Maher, whom she married Sept. 1, 1947, in Great Barrington, died Nov. 9, 1959. She leaves a daughter, Mary Wright of Falls Village, Conn.; a sister, Laura Babins of Wethersfield, Conn.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A service celebrating the life of Dorothy May Bunce Maher, who died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, will be conducted Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at 11 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington by the Rev. William Murphy, pastor of St. Peter's Church in Great Barrington. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the CAHmino Fund, a fund set up in memory of Christopher Hewins for the benefit of children's charities in Berkshire County, through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. She also leaves a son-in-law, Joseph Wright; a grandson, Joseph Wright and his wife, Roxanne; a granddaughter, Caryn Wright, and a great-grandson, Steven Wright.
