Dr. Joseph Moriarty

Dr. Joseph Moriarty, 74, of Goodell Road died yesterday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield after a brief illness. Born in Manchester, Conn., on April 24, 1932, son of Joseph and Evelyn Waldorf Moriarty, he was a 1950 graduate of Manchester High School. He attended the University of Connecticut, and at the completion of his third year, was accepted at St. Louis University School of Medicine, where he earned his doctor of medicine degree in 1957. Dr. Moriarty served his internship as an officer in the Air Force at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu from 1957 to 1960. He was discharged with the rank of major. He moved to Pittsfield in 1971 to be a member of the staff at Berkshire Medical Center. Until he became ill in August, he had been an associate radiologist for eight years at Riverbend Medical Group in Chicopee. From 1977 until its closing in 1998, he was chief of radiology at the former Hillcrest Hospital. From 1970 to 1971, he was clinical instructor in radiology at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport, Conn. From 1966 to 1969, he served a residency at St. Vincent's for diagnostic and therapeutic radiology and nuclear medicine and then was employed as a general practitioner at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Conn., for six years. Dr. Moriarty was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society, Berkshire County and Massachusetts medical societies, the American College of Radiology and Phi Beta Pi Medical Society. He enjoyed traveling and working on his family farm in Lanesborough. He and his wife, the former Patricia Finn, were married in St. Margaret's Church in Waterbury, Conn., on May 19, 1956. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Elizabeth Moriarty Clouart of Narragansett, R.I., and Maureen Laughnane of Pittsfield; five sons, Mark and Paul Moriarty, both of Lanesborough, Thomas Moriarty of Dover, N.J., Timothy Moriarty of Stockbridge and William Moriarty of Pittsfield; and six grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Dr. Joseph A. Moriarty, who died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, will be Wednesday at 7:45 at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME in Lenox, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church in Pittsfield celebrated by the Rev. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 4 to 7. Dr. Moriarty also leaves his grandchildren, Krista and Mandy Moriarty, Lisa and Patrick Laughnane, and Cole and Ryder Moriarty; his sons-in-law, Kevin Clouart and J.B. Laughnane; and daughters-in-law, Holly and Tina Moriarty. He also had been a friend of Bill W. for many years.
