Pauline Young

Pauline Young, 92, of 9B Franklin Court died yesterday at North Adams Commons. Born in Merrimack, N.H., on April 10, 1914, daughter of Charles F. and Bessie Copp Young, she attended schools in Nashua, N.H., and was a graduate of Nashua High School. She also attended the New England Conservatory of Music, majoring in violin. She received her bachelor of music degree from Syracuse (N.Y.) University. In 1951, she was awarded a master of music education degree from Boston University. She pursued further graduate work in music education at Teachers College, Columbia University, Boston University, Ithaca College and the New England Conservatory of Music. Miss Young was a former member of the New England Conservatory Orchestra and City Symphony of Syracuse, N.Y. She was employed in the North Adams Public School System, serving as music director and, later, as an elementary school vocal teacher from 1951 to 1960. She left in August of that year to teach at the American Elementary Dependent School for the Army in Nuremberg, Germany. She returned to North Adams in 1962 and worked in the school system until 1984, when she retired. In her younger years, she taught vocal and instrumental music in public schools on Martha's Vineyard, in Bristol, Conn., and in Billerica. She was a member of First Congregational Church, the North Adams Teachers Association, the former Berkshire County Music Educators' Association, the Massachusetts Music Educators' Association, the Music Educators' National Conference, Mu Phi Epsilon National Music Honor Society for Women, the Berkshire County Retired Teachers Association, and the Coral and Monday clubs of North Adams. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Pauline Young, who died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, will be conducted Thursday at 10 at AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Jill Graham, pastor of First Congregational Church in North Adams. Burial will be private in Last Rest Cemetery, Merrimack, N.H. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 6 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the North Adams Ambulance Service through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247. She was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Young.
