Walter A. "Doc" Hutchinson

Walter A. "Doc" Hutchinson, 95, of New Lenox Road died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center shortly after being stricken at home. Born in Lenox on June 12, 1911, son of Garfield and Minnie Pulshier Hutchinson, he attended local schools and was a 1930 graduate of the former Lenox High School. Mr. Hutchinson was a veteran of the Army Medical Corps during World War II, and served as a surgical technician at Lovell General Hospital at Fort Devens and later Cushing General Hospital in Framingham. He was honorably discharged with the rank of technical sergeant on Dec. 17, 1945. He owned and operated his own service and gas station, both before and after his military service. It was razed in 1957 so that the site could be used for the North Lenox Package Store, which he built, owned and operated until his retirement in 1977. Mr. Hutchinson was a lifelong member of St. Helena's Chapel in New Lenox. He served the Town of Lenox as a member of the Board of Health and later on the Zoning Board of Appeals. He was also a member of the corporation of the Lenox Savings Bank for many years, and was a Boston Red Sox fan. He leaves a sister-in-law, Edna Hutchinson, with whom he made his home. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mr. Walter Arthur "Doc" Hutchinson of Lenox, who died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, also leaves his niece, Arlene Marchand and her husband Edward; a nephew, Richard Hutchinson; a grandnephew, Michael Marchand; four grandnieces, Catherine Hibbard, Christine Lovejoy, Wendy Hathaway and Ricarda Hutchinson; and a great-grand niece, Whitney Hathaway. He was predeceased by a brother, Lawrence R. Hutchinson, and his sisters, Dora Kilmer and Albertha Hibbard. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME in Lenox with the Rev. Daina Salnitis, rector of St. Helena's Chapel, officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow evening from 5 to 8. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Helena's Chapel in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
