Herbert F. Ried

Herbert F. Ried, 76, of 91 Christian Hill Road, died Sunday at home. Born in North Adams on May 6, 1930, son of Adams and Matilda Ried, he moved to Great Barrington as a child and attended local schools. He was a 1949 graduate of the former Searles High School and a member of many sports teams there, including the basketball team. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Ried was the owner of Ried Cleaners from 1952 until his retirement in December 2006. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and a member of the James A. Modolo Post 8348 and the Egremont Country Club. He enjoyed golf and was a New York Giants fan. He and his wife, the former Nancy A. Baldyga, were married March 28, 1953. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Michael Ried of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and Tony Ried of Great Barrington; a daughter, Cathy Coffman of Great Barrington; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Herbert Ried, who died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, conducted by the Rev. Charles VanAusdall. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Great Barrington. Calling hours will precede the service from 11 to 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in Herbie's memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He also leaves four grandchildren, Adam and Machaela Ried and Justina and Jessica Coffman; and two great-grandchildren, Hayley Lorette and Aiden Coffman.
