James Owen Galeucia

James Owen Galeucia, 71, of 155 Robinson Road died Saturday at home after a brief illness. Born in Hinsdale on Oct. 20, 1936, son of Daniel W. and Olive Hathaway Galeucia, he was a 1954 graduate of the former Dalton High School, where he played varsity football. An Army veteran, he served from September 1954 to 1957, 34 months of that time in Germany. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant. Mr. Galeucia was employed by Western Massachusetts Electric Co. as a lineman. Following his retirement in 1994, he worked at the Country Club of Pittsfield as a groundskeeper. He was senior vice commander of the Dalton Veterans of Foreign Wars and a past commander of the Dalton American Legion. He enjoyed playing golf and pitch in various leagues. His wife, the former Barbara A. Thornton, whom he married Jan. 28, 1961, died March 9, 2005. He leaves a daughter, Michelle Peters of Huntsburg, Ohio; two sons, James Galeucia of Hinsdale and Craig Galeucia of Bluffton, S.C.; two sisters, June Adams of Boston and Betty O'Dell of the state of Florida; two brothers, Warren Galeucia of Pittsfield and Nelson Galeucia of Hinsdale; and two grandchildren. Another daughter, Doreen Marie Galeucia, died in 1962. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside services for James O. Galeucia, who died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. at Maple Street Cemetery in Hinsdale by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta of St. Agnes' Catholic Church. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME. He also leaves a son-in-law, Steven; a daughter-in-law, Melissa; a brother-in-law, Daniel Thornton; a brother-in-law, William Thornton Jr. and his wife, Karen; a nephew, William Thornton III; two grandchildren, with whom he enjoyed spending time, Danielle and Andrew Peters; his beloved dog, Gracie; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Dick, Marty and Dan Galeucia. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hinsdale Fire Department, in care of the funeral home, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
