William P. Smith

William P. Smith, 86, of 21 Prospect St. died Saturday at Fairview Hospital. Born in Great Barrington on Nov. 21, 1920, son of Henry and Bessie Caul Smith, he attended local schools. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 49th Air Depot Group in the Asiatic-Pacific area, and was discharged in 1946. Mr. Smith was employed by Berkshire School as maintenance director from 1981 to 1984. Before that, he was employed by M.T. Cavanaugh Plumbing Co. until 1981 and by the former Great Barrington Manufacturing Co. until it closed. He was a member of James A. Modolo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8347 and the American Legion, and a past member of Wyantenuck Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf and woodworking. He and his wife, the former Pollyann Coon, were married in 1950 at South Egremont Congregational Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Terry W. Smith of Great Barrington; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William P. Smith, who died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington. The Rev. Charles van Ausdall with officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a calling hour preceding the funeral from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in William's memory be made to Fairview Hospital in care of the funeral home. Mr. Smith also leaves a daughter-in-law, Ellie; two grandsons, Michael and his wife, Kim, and Daniel; and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte; two nephews, Edward McCormick and Thomas Smith; and a niece, Judith Parks. He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and Orlando, and by a sister, Ethel McCormick. He also enjoyed attending his two grandsons' sporting events and taking care of his lawn.
