Jane C. Santos

Jane C. Santos, 87, of 304 Stockbridge Road, died Sunday at Fairview Hospital. She and her husband built and managed the Briar Cliff Motel on Stockbridge Road until 1976. Born in Mineola, N.Y., on Feb. 4, 1920, daughter of Alfred and Jessie McKelvie Currie, she moved to Aikens, S.C., as a child and attended school there, graduating from Aikens (S.C.) High School. She received her registered nursing degree from Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn. She moved to Great Barrington in the late 1940s. Before building the Briar Cliff Motel in 1961, Mrs. Santos was employed by Fairview Hospital, where she worked until 1951. Before that, she was employed by Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Santos and her husband, , John L. Santos, were married in New London on Aug. 21, 1942. He died Nov. 16, 2005. She leaves a son, James Santos of Great Barrington; a daughter, Jayne Tonry of Canton; and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private graveside service for Jane C. Santos, who died Sunday, April 15, 2007, will be conducted at Elmwood Cemetery by the Rev. Charles VanAusdall. There are no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy in Jane's memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Service in care of the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230, which is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Santos also leaves three grandchildren, Amanda Santos and Kelsey and Luke Tonry.
