L. David Hashim

L. David Hashim, 41, of 141 Churchill St., died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center after a two-year battle with a brain tumor. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 21, 1966, son of June Shogry Hashim and the late Lawrence D. Hashim, he was a 1984 graduate of Taconic High School. He attended Western New England College, where he studied business administration and was a 1987 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., where he earned an associate's degree in occupational studies. Mr. Hashim retired from Sandals Resort in Nassau, the Bahamas, in 2004 due to his declining health. There, he was employed as executive sous chef. A professional chef, Mr. Hashim began his career with the former Coach Lite Restaurant. Later, he became chef at the Federal House in Lee. In 1986, he went to Boston and became chef at the 21 Club and later chef saucier at the five-star, Boston-based Swiss hotel, Le Marquis De LaFayette. Following that, he served as chef saucier at another five-star hotel, the Montreux Palace, located on Lake Geneva, Switzerland. In 1990, Mr. Hashim returned to the United States to serve as chef de cuisine at Maldonado's Restaurant, a four-star restaurant in Pasadena, Calif., then served as S'meraldi's chef at the Regal Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. In December 1998, he became the executive sous chef tournaut at the Western Rio Mar Beach Resort, a four-star, four-diamond resort in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. As a child, he played hockey at the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club. He also enjoyed skiing, baseball, fishing and boating, and was a Boston Red Sox fan. Besides his mother of Surprise, Ariz., he leaves two brothers, Paul M. Hashim of Pittsfield and Mark A. Hashim of San Diego; his stepfather, Jack McCloskey of Surprise; a stepbrother, John C. McCloskey Jr., of Bensalem, Pa.; two stepsisters, Lynn Sabo of Phoenixville, Pa., and Karen McCloskey of Watertown. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for L. David Hashim, who died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 67 East St., by the Rev. Hannah P. Anderson, rector, and William J. Frazier, pastoral leader. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Hashim may be made to the L. David Hashim Culinary Fund in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Mr. Hashim also leaves his nephews, Julian, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was a people person who loved to be with his family and friends.

I was David's Sous Chef at Maldonado's in Pasadena. We had a lot of good times together. I still have and use several of the recipes that he gave me back in the 90's. I remember he drove a blue mustang... he had so much energy, and always had a great smile. Sometimes when I am in the kitchen and do something crazy, I stop and wonder why it is I act that way? Then say to myself, I do that because of Good old' Hashim. David, Alexander Kremmer and I used to dream of all going to Montroux together but it never happened I am a chef in San Diego and owe DH for the leg up he gave to a kid fresh out of culinary school.
