Robert Mittenbuhler, 81, of 30 Keep Hill Road, died Thursday at North Adams Regional Hospital of cancer. Born in Chicago on Oct. 12, 1925, son of Robert L. and Susan Logan Mitenbuler, he graduated from the University of Chicago in 1947 and later received a doctorate from Syracuse University in 1963. He was a veteran of the Army. Mr. Mittenbuhler taught at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. He lived for many years in Salzburg, Austria. He returned to the United States in the 1970s and settled in Williamstown in June 1989. He leaves a son, Josef Mittenbuhler of Salzburg. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mr. Mittenbuhler, who died Thursday, May 3, 2007, will be cremated and his ashes will be recycled in an appropriate manner. He will be missed by his many friends for his expansive humor and keen intellect. There will be no services, but a memorial meeting of his friends will be held at a later date to celebrate his life. The FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Mittenbuhler was fully fluent in German and loved all things about the German culture. He was very passionate about conservation issues and became a regular and generous supporter of many national conservation organizations. He also loved animals and contributed to animal rights organizations. For years he sponsored many high school students from various schools to study German language in Germany.

I just tonight (22 March 2013) discovered this obituary for the brilliant and thoughtful Robert Mittenbuhler. He first wrote to me when I was working at WGBH radio in 1993 and sent me a book by Donald Francis Tovey as a gift. Thereafter, we had numerous exchanges by mail (he often sent me postcards from his travels in Europe), and I even had the pleasure of meeting him once or twice, when he came to my home near Boston and joined me for dinner at a local restaurant. I'm saddened to learn of his passing and regret that I was unaware of it for nearly six years. I still have all his notes and will cherish them always as a memento of a fine mind and kindred spirit.
