Donald F. "Mac" McDermott

Donald F. "Mac" McDermott, 57, of the Florida Keys died July 6 at Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West, Fla. He and his wife, the former Sherry Caul, ran an interior design/furniture-restoration business in Sheffield at one time. Born in the Grafton Hill area of Worcester on April 9, 1950, son of James and Helen Taurus McDermott, he graduated from St. Stephen's School and from Assumption College. Mr. McDermott was employed as a counselor for adolescents and their families in Marblehead before moving to Sheffield. An offshore sailing racer, he competed in two Marion-Bermuda races and, most recently, in the Fort Lauderdale Key West races. He was a full certificate holder with the U.S. Power Squadron and taught courses with that organization both in the Berkshire Squadron and in the Key West Squadron. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing and sports. He and his wife were married June 17, 1976. Besides his wife and parents, of Eastham, he leaves two sons, Jeremy Dillon McDermott of Medfield and Brendon Patrick McDermott of Manchester, Conn.; three brothers, James McDermott of Worcester, Kevin McDermott of Orleans and Brian McDermott of Tewksbury. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Donald F. "Mac" McDermott died Friday, July 6, 2007, in Key West, Fla. He leaves his parents, wife, two sons and three brothers. He also leaves his sisters-in-law, Peg and Gail; a daughter-in-law, Jamie Lauren; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; a great deal of wonderful friends; and his big old red dog, Ripley. He leaves behind many stories shared among great sailing buddies along the whole East Coast. Services will take place in the Berkshires at a date to be announced. DWYER FUNERAL HOME is in charge of local arrangements.
