William Albert Mitchell

William Albert Mitchell, 80, of 43 Holmes Road died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 13, 1927, son of George and Louise Mitchell, he attended elementary school in Lanesborough, in the village of Berkshire, and was a 1944 graduate of Pittsfield High School. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served aboard the USS Biloxi. Mr. Mitchell was employed by General Electric Co. as a mechanic for 17 years, retiring in 1987. Before that, he was co-owner of the former Lee & Bill's Gulf Station in the Allendale section of Pittsfield, which later moved to South Street in Pittsfield. He was a Golden Sheaf member of the Hinsdale Grange, and a member of the Dalton Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Hinsdale Senior Center. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He and his wife, the former Lauria E. Bourdo, were married Oct. 6, 1947, at St. Patrick's Church. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Linda M. Rollins of Pittsfield, Frances C. Major of Plainfield and Cynthia L. Oligny of Middlefield; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Laura Ann Mitchell, died in 1951 at the age of 3. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William A. Mitchell, who died Friday, July 20, 2007, will be conducted Wednesday, July 25, at 10 a.m. at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor of St. Patrick's Church. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Hinsdale. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hinsdale Ambulance Fund or to Elder Services of Berkshire County, both in care of the funeral home. Mr. Mitchell is lovingly survived by his five grandchildren, Amy Coyne, Renee Dillon, William and Laura Kane, and Sandra Oligny; and by his four great-grandchildren. He also leaves two sons-in-law, Ronald Major and Peter Oligny. A granddaughter, Christina Louise Rollins, died in 1999, and two brothers, George and Edward Mitchell, also are deceased.
