Paul A. Martel Sr.

Paul A. Martel Sr., 61, of 3 Myrtle St. died Wednesday at Craneville Center in Dalton, where he had recently been transferred after a six-week stay at the Albany VA Medical Center. Born in Westfield on March 26, 1946, son of the late Francis A. and Dora Trottier Martel, he attended Adams schools. An Air Force veteran, he served stateside with a security company from July 21, 1963, until his discharge on Dec. 2, 1964, because of a service-related injury. Mr. Martel was employed by several area businesses, including Mullen Mayflower Movers, Castine Trucking of North Adams, Butler Wholesale of Adams and General Electric Co., where he worked as a crane operator in the power transformer division. He also owned and operated Sahara Restaurant on Spring Street for six years until an infirmity forced him to sell the business. He was a communicant of the Catholic Parishes of Adams and a member of the Maple Grove Civic Club, American Legion Post 160 and the North Adams Vietnam Veterans. He was a bugler with the Pittsfield Drum and Bugle Corps and, in his early years, a center fielder for the champion Arnolds/Arnolds Clubbers of the Adams Babe Ruth League. He and his wife, the former Annette M. Letourneau, were married Nov. 29, 1975. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Paul A. Martel Jr. of Adams; two daughters, Dawn M. Cote of Pittsfield and Michelle A. LaBlue of North Adams; a stepson, Dennis F. Frenier of North Adams; a brother, Francis T. Martel of Hoosac Falls, N.Y.; a sister, Mary Lefebvre of the state of New York; and 12 grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A prayer service in the Roman Catholic tradition will be offered tomorrow, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. at MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, 4-6 Liberty St., Adams. The prayers in celebration of Paul's life will be offered by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Adams Catholic Parish. A visitation period for family and friends will be observed today, Aug. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. Following cremation, inurnment will occur at the family plot. Mr. Martel also leaves a daughter-in-law, Melissa Martel.
