Jerry Phillip Ovitt

Jerry Phillip Ovitt, 59, of Hartsville-Mill River Road died Friday at his home. Born in Great Barrington on May 5, 1948 , son of Ronald and Edna King Ovitt, he graduated from Mount Everet Regional High School in 1967. Mr. Ovitt was a self-employed carpenter who enjoyed fishing, world travel, and working on his Mill River home. He leaves his partner of 16 years, David Johnson, with whom he resided; a daughter, Brenda Ovitt of Pittsfield; two stepsons, Raymond Ferrin of Dalton and Jeffrey Ferrin of Lee; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth Carpenter of Pittsfield and Theresa Harris of Clayton, N.C.; seven brothers, Brian R. Ovitt of Sheffield, Robert F. Ovitt of Mill River, Wayne B. Ovitt of Pittsfield, Roger D. and Carlton J. Ovitt, both of Canaan, Conn., Raymond E. Ovitt of Falls Village, Conn., and his twin, Garry P. Ovitt Sr. of Sheffield; two sisters, Eleanor M. Heineman of Newington, Conn., and Joy Ann Eichstedt of Easton; his former wife, Beverly J. Ovitt of Pittsfield; and nine step-grandchildren. His stepfather, Edwin C. Mansir, is deceased. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A service of remembrance for Jerry P. Ovitt, who died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at St. James' Episcopal Church in Great Barrington. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Great Barrington. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jerry P. Ovitt Memorial Fund through the funeral home. Jerry's professional workmanship revealed a gifted and aesthetic mind enabling him to bring every project to a serviceable yet visually satisfying conclusion. He loved the outdoors, especially when the weather was warm, and cherished his beloved family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time at the house in Greece he shared with his longtime partner, David Johnson, and their dear friend, David Walker-Price. His warmth, singular humor and wit, and humility made him a joy to be with. Everyone who was privileged to know him will miss his healing presence. There will always be only one Jerry Ovitt. He leaves nine step-grandchildren, Joseph and Zachary Carpenter and Raymond, Christopher, Jonathan, Heather, Shawn, Rachel and Rebekah Ferrin. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald W. Ovitt.
