Eugene Albert Lapine

Eugene Albert Lapine, 83, of 803 East Main St. died Tuesday at home. Born in Adams on Nov. 4, 1923, son of Charles and Aurora Caron Lapine, he attended schools in North Adams and Clarksburg and graduated in 1942 from Drury High School, where he was captain of the varsity football team. He also received an associate degree from Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served on the USS Arkansas, which participated in several major battles. He obtained the rank of seaman first class and received several campaign medals. An expert carpenter, Mr. Lapine was employed by the James Whitney, Orlando Farinon and Arthur Boucher construction companies. He was last employed by Robert DeSanty Co., retiring in 1988. He was a communicant of St. Francis' Church and a member of the USS Arkansas Association. He enjoyed gardening. He and his wife, the former Mary Jane Douglas, were married April 26, 1947, at St. Francis' Church. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Jean Caprari of Pittsfield, Kathleen Guerino of Bennington, Vt., and Barbara Murray of Gambrills, Md.; a sister, Irene Mattison of Williamstown; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Eugene Albert Lapine, who died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, will be Friday at 8:15 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Francis' Church. Burial with military honors will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested for the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire through the funeral home. He leaves three sons-in-law, Lawrence Caprari, Vincent J. Guerino and Glenn Murray; nine grandchildren, Brad, Brian and Evan Caprari, Matthew, David and Gina Guerino, Gregory Murray, Kristin Murray, and Melissa Murray Bowman; and five great-grandchildren, Augustin and Julia Caprari, Isabella Guerino, and Brett and Natalie Murray. He was predeceased by two sisters, Rita Bishop and Anita Lapine, and by a brother, Louis Lapine.
