Thurman Lewellyn Cross, 59, formerly of Housatonic Court in the Furnace District, died Friday at Champaign Valley Physicians' Hospital in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Born in Elizabethtown, N.Y., on Oct. 15, 1948, son of Irene Carson Cross and the late Lewellyn Cross, he attended schools in Elizabethtown, N.Y., and moved to South County in the mid-1960s. Mr. Cross owned and operated Cross's Outdoor Services, which specialized in landscaping and lawn mowing, for 15 years in Stockbridge. He also worked as a security guard at the former Adams Super Market in Great Barrington, as an auxiliary police officer and as a volunteer firefighter for the Housatonic Hose Company. He moved to Moriah, N.Y. in the early 1990s, where he started another business, Cross's Painting & Poor Man's Charters. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Besides his mother, of Lewis, he leaves a son, Jason Cross of New Marlborough; a daughter, Tania Cross of Stockbridge; three sisters, Jane Hodgen of Homer, Alaska, Judy Gardner of Clifton Park, N.Y., and Kathy McClurgh of Hillsdale, N.Y.; a brother, Tracy Cross of Lewis; and a grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Thurman Lewellyn Cross, who died Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, will be today from 4 to 7 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. Burial will be tomorrow in Lewis, N.Y. He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Amanda (Jason) Menard; three brothers-in-law, Paul (Jane) Hodgen, John (Judy) Gardner, and Tom (Kathy) McClurgh; his one and only grandson, Dominic Cross; and numerous nieces and nephews.
