Dr. Jay Harris Katz

Dr. Jay Harris Katz, 79, of 59 Lake Buel Road died Monday at home of prostate cancer. Born in Bronx, N.Y., on Sept. 11, 1928, son of Herman and Ida Farber Katz, he graduated from Bronx High School of Science and received his bachelor's degree from Columbia College in 1948. After a year of graduate school at Columbia University School of Medicine, he went on to Harvard Medical School, where he received his medical degree in 1953. Dr. Katz was a general practitioner in Great Barrington specializing in internal medicine. He retired in 1998. Before that, he was employed by Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and by Albany Medical Center, where he worked in nuclear medicine. He also worked in hematology in various hospitals and laboratories in the Boston area, and held appointments at Tufts, Harvard and University of Massachusetts Boston medical schools. He was a member of Hevreh of Southern Berkshire and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, the Elderhostel in Italy, reading, history and politics. His first wife, the former Edabeth Berman, died in 1981 after a long illness. He and his wife, the former Martha D. Peck, were married Sept. 30, 1989, on Martha's Vineyard. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Charles M. Katz of Pittsfield; three stepsons, Frederic Peck of Westchester, Calif., Jonathan Peck of Ashley Falls and Jason Peck of Escondido, Calif.; and four step-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Dr. Jay Harris Katz, who died Nov. 5, 2007, will be conducted Friday at noon at Hevreh of Southern Berkshire by Rabbi Deborah Zecher, spiritual leader. Burial will follow in Ahavath Sholem Cemetery. Immediately following the burial, the family will observe Shiva at the Katz residence until 4 p.m., and then on Saturday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in Dr. Katz's memory may be made to Southern Berkshire Elderly Transportation Association, in care of BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington. Dr. Katz also leaves his stepdaughters-in-law, Christina (Frederic) Susana Mateu-Pino (Jonathan) and Erin (Jason); his late brother's daughter, Deborah Zimmerman and her family of New Jersey; a nephew, Stuart Katsh; four grandchildren, Alexander, Hannah, Jason and Jordi Peck; and his beloved English cocker spaniel, Chaucer, whom he adored.

Jay was predeceased by his beloved older sister Hilda Katsh and her husband Melvin, of Melvin's Pharmacy fame. I will never forget our wonderful picnics on the Tanglewood lawn.
