Edward A. DeAngelo

Edward Anthony DeAngelo, 68, of 63 Oak Hill Road died Tuesday at St. Louis University Medical Center after being stricken while attending a UNICO convention. Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 1, 1932, son of Anthony and Anna Supka DeAngelo, he graduated from Pittsfield schools. He also graduated from Berkshire Community College with an associate's degree in fire science. He served in the National Guard. Mr. DeAngelo was appointed by former Mayor Robert Dillon to the Pittsfield Fire Department on June 14, 1964. He served most of his career as an inspector with the Fire Prevention Division. He retired from the department in December 1997 with 33 years of service. After his retirement, he worked as a substitute teacher at Taconic High School. He was a longtime member of the International Brotherhood of Basketball Officials and coached the Pittsfield High School girls' junior varsity basketball team for many years. Mr. DeAngelo was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church and a member of the Skyline and Berkshire Hills country clubs. He also was a member of the International Association of Firefighters and was appointed to the State Board of Fire Prevention Regulation. He was a member of the Massachusetts Retirees Association and the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge 564, where he was a past president. He was active in UNICO, a national Italian men's service organization, serving as past president and national district governor. He leaves his wife, the former Charleene Rosa, whom he married in 1992; a daughter, Robin Nolan of Honolulu; a sister, Rosemarie DeAngelo of Pittsfield, and two grandchildren. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 4, at 10 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Pius Murray, CSS. Entombment will be at a later date in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 8 at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Members of UNICO will meet at the funeral home at 6 p.m. to recite the Memorial Ritual. Members of the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge 564, together with a delegation of the Sons of Italy Grand Lodge of Boston and the national president, will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 to conduct their service. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to establish the Edward A. DeAngelo Memorial Scholarship to be awarded through the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge 564, in care of the funeral home. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard J. DeAngelo.
