Myrtle I. Mercier

Myrtle I. Mercier, 100, of 21 Church St., died yesterday at home. Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 12, 1907, daughter of Nicholas and Annie Fassel Kirchner, she was a 1925 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She moved to Stockbridge in 1941. Mrs. Mercier was employed by the former Kelsey's Market in Pittsfield until 1929. She worked in the kitchens of Monument Mountain Regional High School in Stockbridge and of Edgecombe Nursing Home in Lenox during the 1970s. From 1973 to 1980, she worked part time at Monument Mountain. She did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels in Stockbridge until 2005. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a member of Stockbridge Grange 295, of Berkshire South Pomona Grange 25 and of the state and national Granges. She also was a member of AARP South Berkshire 87, of the Lee Senior Citizens and of All Stars 4-H. Her husband, Raymond C. Mercier, whom she married Oct. 27, 1926, died June 16, 1995. She leaves four sons, Charles R. Mercier of Troy, N.Y., Norman J. Mercier of Oxford, Pierre M. Mercier of Pittsfield and Andre J. Mercier of Bridport, Vt.; six daughters, Irene T. Kent of Randolph, N.Y., Thelma A. Barzottini of Pittsfield, Virginia A. Rock of Cadyville, N.Y., Mary Jane Lakatos of Marietta, Ga., Bernadette S. Mercier of Otis and Anna M. Maher of Oxford; 35 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Bruce M. Mercier, in 1998. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Myrtle I. Mercier, who died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, will be Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Stockbridge. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Stockbridge. Visiting hours will be at the funeral home tomorrow from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to St. Joseph's Church, to Meals on Wheels or to Stockbridge Grange 295, all in care of the funeral home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.
