Cheryl Kane, 60

SHEFFIELD - Cheryl Shmulsky Kane, 60, of Sheffield died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at home. Born in Great Barrington on Dec. 26, 1947, daughter of Mildred Tatsapaugh Shmulsky and the late Alexander Schmulsky, she was a 1965 graduate of Mount Everett Regional School. She received her master's degree in education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her doctorate in education from Tallahassee University in Florida. She resided in Washington, D.C., until retiring to Sheffield in 2006. Ms. Kane devoted her life to education, working for the U.S. Department of Education on various commissions to improve school curriculums. She was quoted in Newsweek as executive director of a panel that focused on meeting the needs of poor and minority children so they could achieve in education and not be lost or left behind. She enjoyed flowers and photography, and her two beloved dogs Sammy and Sophie. Besides her mother, of Sheffield, she leaves two sisters, Ellen Sable of Princeton, Maine, and Nancy Schmulsky of Sheffield; two brothers, Ted Schmulski of New Marlborough and Stephen Schmulsky of Sheffield, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much and who brought her great joy. She was predeceased another brother, Daniel, in 2007. FUNERAL NOTICE - Funeral services for Cheryl Kane will be private.
