Joseph D. Welch, 84

SHEFFIELD - Joseph D. Welch, 84, of 115 Main St., died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. Born on Dec. 8, 1923, son of Robert and Anna Pinkava Welch, he attended schools in Sheffield and was a 1941 graduate of the former Sheffield High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a radio operator in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes and in Central Europe. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. Mr. Welch worked as a carpenter for the former Albert Anderson Co. in Great Barrington, and then for the Rainaldi Construction Co. in Canaan, Conn., retiring in 1977. He was a member of James A. Modolo VFW Post 8348 in Great Barrington. He enjoyed NASCAR, the Boston Red Sox and gardening. His wife, the former Harriet Feldblum, died in September 1958 at the age of 41. He leaves a son, Joseph G. Welch of Sheffield; a daughter, Patricia Welch, with whom he resided; a brother, F. James Welch of Oneonta, N.Y.; a sister, Evelyn Mullen of Canaan, and two grandchildren, Joseph J. Welch and Cailin Welch. FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Joseph D. Welch will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the Fairview Hospital Critical Care Unit in care of Birches-Roy Funeral Home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230, which is in charge of arrangements.
