Lillian V. Smith, 84

GREAT BARRINGTON - Lillian V. Smith, 84, formerly of Highland Drive, died peacefully on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at Fairview Hospital. Born in Springfield on June 28, 1923, daughter of Peter and Eftihia Vatousiou, she was a 1941 graduate of Classical High School. She graduated in 1945 from A.I.C., Springfield with a bachelor of arts degree in history, and received her master's degree in education from Springfield College. Mrs. Smith was an elementary school teacher and taught in Connecticut schools, and the Sheffield School System in the 1950's and 60's. She then taught in the Berkshire Hills and Southern Berkshire School System in the 60's as a substitute teacher. She also worked as a tour guide for over 20 years for the Norman Rockwell Museum from 1976 to 2000. She was a communicant of St. Peter's Church. She was an avid reader, enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, meeting people and traveling. Her husband, Elmer L. Smith Jr., whom she married on July 24, 1954, at St. Mary's Church in Longmeadow, and at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield, died Dec. 5, 1976. She leaves two sons, Peter L. and his wife, Kathryn, of Centerville, Va., and Sean M. and his wife, Marie, of Wakefield; a daughter, Attorney Susan M. Smith and her husband, Vernet F. Lussier Jr., of New Marlborough; a sister, Helen Lavelle, of Naples, Fla., and six grandchildren, Kelley, Haley, Kayla, Melissa, Nicholas and Paige. She was predeceased by two brothers, Harry Vatousiou, and Michel Vickers. FUNERAL NOTICE â€' Services for Lillian V. Smith who died March 16, 2008 will be held Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at 10 a.m. with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Peter's Church, officiated by the Rev. William Murphy, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Tuesday March 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, family requests that expressions of sympathy in Lillian's memory may be made to either the James P. Dohoney Scholarship Fund or to the Fairview Hospital Kickery Patient Fund in care of the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street Great Barrington, MA. 01230.
