David G. Andersen, 63

NEW MARLBOROUGH â€' David G. Andersen, 63, of Hartsville-New Marlborough Road died early Monday morning, May 19, 2008, at home following a courageous battle with mesothelioma. Born in Boston on Jan. 21, 1945, the son of Kenneth and Mary Hogan Andersen, he attended schools there and graduated from Springfield College with a degree in psychology. He settled in New Marlborough in the early 1970s. An Air Force veteran, he enlisted after college and stationed throughout the Midwest. A talented craftsman, Mr. Anderson built custom homes and worked as project manager at Edith Wharton Restoration's The Mount in Lenox, as well as a restoration consultant. He later was a self-employed builder, working on homes and projects throughout the area with his sons. He liked spending time outdoors, working in his gardens and cultivating his apple orchard, where he grew heirloom apples. He also enjoyed photography and fishing and was an avid sports fan. He and his wife, the former Susan Doane, were married Dec. 19, 1970. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Jesse Andersen of Cranston, R.I., and Nicholas Andersen of New Marlborough; a daughter, Merina Andersen of New Marlborough; two sisters, Elizabeth Falxa of Newton and Johanna Pratt of Ashfield; a brother, Kenneth Andersen of Rutland, Vt.; two sisters-in-law, Lucinda Shmulsky of New Marlborough and Diane Cook of Pittsfield, a brother-in-law, Russell Doane of Lancaster, Pa., and several nieces and nephews. Another son, Ezra Andersen, died on July 20, 1999. FUNERAL NOTICE â€' The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 21, from 3 until 6 p.m. at Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made for research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute or to Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston for the International Mesothelioma Program through the Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
