Northway W. Abbott, 87

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Northway W. Abbott, 87, of Sun City, Ariz., a native of North Adams, died Saturday, March 21, 2009, in Arizona. Born on March 10, 1922, a son of Samuel Northway and Edith Marie Purnell Shaw Abbott, he graduated from Drury High School with the class of 1939. He resided for many years in the city's Blackinton neighborhood. A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 45th Infantry in the invasion of Italy, at Anzio and in Southern France and was a recipient of a Purple Heart. Mr. Abbott was employed by the former General Cable Co in Williamstown, retiring 22 years ago. He was a member of the Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion and the Lafayette-Greylock Lodge of Freemasons. He and his wife, the former Ruth Lillian Jones, were married March 19, 1943, in North Adams. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Carol Ann DeBlois and her husband, Gregory, of Adams, Linda R. DeBlois-McCarthy and her husband, James McCarthy, of North Adams; four grandchildren, William A. DeBlois and his wife, Tracy Martino DeBlois, of Lunenburg; Daniel A. DeBlois and his wife, Nichole Boyer DeBlois, of Dalton, Laura DeBlois Slade and her husband, Thomas, of Stamford, Vt., and Robert Scott DeBlois and his wife, Gwendolyn Sawyer DeBlois, of Savoy; eight great-grandchildren, David Francis DeBlois, Emily Louise DeBlois, Elizabeth Marie DeBlois, Justine Lillian Slade, Krista Marie Slade, Zachery DeBlois, Timothy DeBlois and Morgan Marie DeBlois, and several grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Alice Edith Abbott, on Sept. 16, 1925, and son-in-law Norman DeBlois on June 17, 1992. FUNERAL NOTICE - In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested First Baptist Church of North Adams through the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247. There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
