McCann Rolls Past Commerce for Second Straight Win
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Anthony Trzcinski rushed for 184 yards and five touchdowns, Landyn Phillips added 57 rushing yards and a touchdown, and Hunter Lancto rushed for 43 yards and another score as McCann (2-1) rolled past Commerce, 62-12, Friday night for the Hornets’ second straight victory.
The Hornets wasted little time setting the tone. After forcing a Commerce stop on the opening possession, McCann Tech needed just five plays to find the end zone, with Anthony Trzcinski scoring his first touchdown of the night.
The Hornets' defense continued to create opportunities. A few plays later, McCann forced a fumble and immediately turned the takeaway into points, with Hunter Lancto finding the end zone to extend the lead. Commerce struggled to generate much offensively throughout the night, and another forced punt gave McCann the ball back with a chance to add to its advantage.
Trzcinski took advantage as the junior running back broke through the middle and raced 40 yards for his second touchdown, helping McCann jump out to a 24-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
“They were hungry for this and you could tell the difference in practice during the week,” McCann head coach Jon Rochelo said. “They were held accountable and every single one of them were ready to go, and it was a big leap from week 1 and week 2.”
The Hornets' defense continued to make its presence felt in the second quarter, forcing another turnover. Chris Rickert came up with the takeaway, setting McCann up with excellent field position.
This time, Landyn Phillips finished the drive himself, keeping the ball and running 30 yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 38-0. Commerce managed to find some life midway through the second quarter, scoring touchdowns on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit to 38-12.
But the momentum did not last. Trzcinski added another touchdown just before halftime, giving McCann a 46-12 advantage heading into the break.
The Hornets' star running back wasn't finished. Trzcinski found the end zone once again in the third quarter, completing his five-touchdown night and pushing the McCann lead to 54-12.
“Anthony was banged up in the Mahar game, but he’s tough and wants it,” Rochelo said. “He’s a great role model and still shows up even through his injury troubles. His competitiveness and grit is starting to show up more and more each week.”
McCann added one final touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put the finishing touches on the 62-12 victory. With Trzcinski leading the way and the defense repeatedly creating opportunities, McCann put together its most dominant performance of the season and headed into its next game riding a two-game winning streak.
McCann will get a well-deserved bye week before hosting Monument Mountain on its Tri-County League opener on Oct. 9.
