Mount Greylock Boys Down Southwick in Prelims
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Mount Greylock boys cruised past Southwick, 5-1, in the Division 4 State Tournament Preliminary Round.
Fresh off a Western Massachusetts Class C title, Mount Greylock wasted no time getting started, scoring two goals in the first four minutes of play. The first came in the second minute when Everett Bayliss sent a perfect cross to the back post that Luca Mellow-Bartels placed past the outstretched keeper. Just two minutes later, Reed Miles-Harris set up Will Apotsos for the finish, doubling the lead.
It was Mount Greylock’s game from the opening whistle, and it maintained heavy pressure throughout the first half. Their third goal came with a little help from the rainy conditions, as Everett Crowe beat his defender down the sideline and fired a shot that skipped under the keeper before being finished off by Kofi Roberts.
The rain continued to pour as Mount Greylock kept Southwick on its heels. If not for a strong reaction save at the near post, the Mounties would have had a fourth before halftime. As the first half ended, lightning in the area caused a delay, extending the break.
The long pause didn't slow Mount Greylock’s momentum. The Mounties continued to control play after the restart, finding their fourth goal in the 50th minute when Everett Bayliss found the back of the net. They added a fifth goal from Lucas Burrows later in the half but conceded once themselves, marking the first goal allowed by Mount Greylock in postseason play, including all three Western Mass. games.
Mount Greylock will now go on the road to face the No. 8 seed, Northbridge, on Wednesday.
