McLaughlin, McDermott Help Squads Stay Unbeaten

As the fall sports post-season officially gets underway on Monday morning in Wilbraham, just a handful of Berkshire County teams can boast of undefeated records.

This week's iBerkshires.com Athletes of the Week each played a big role in keeping their teams unbeaten.

Wahconah golfer Pat McLaughlin was a consistent medalist or co-medalist in dual matches for his 14-0 squad this fall.

When the team needed him the most, he often was right there at the top of the leaderboard, posting a 39 at Forest Park in a 165-169 win over Hoosac Valley and a 40 at Wyndhurst as the team edged Lenox, 170-175 -- two of Wahconah's closest matches of the fall.

To start this week, McLaughlin battled teammate Tim Kaley at the Berkshire County Classic, where Kaley pulled out a one-stroke win with a birdie on the final hole and McLaughlin beat the rest of the field by four strokes.

On Tuesday, McLaughlin and Kaley will lead Wahconah to the Ranch Golf Club in Southwick for the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Championships and a shot at next week's State Championship in Bellingham.

The Mount Greylock girls soccer team still has some business to take care of in the regular season before it heads to the Western Mass and state tourneys.

But the Mounties have been taking care of business all season with a 11-0-3 mark heading into this week's games against Berkshire County rivals Hoosac Valley and Lenox.

On Friday, the Mounties knocked off recent nemesis Palmer to secure the championship of the Grieve League. Mount Greylock's win gives it an 8-0-1 league record going into Monday's conference final against the Hurricanes; Palmer is 6-1-2 in second place in league play.

Lily McDermott scored the lone goal in Friday's win at Palmer, the first in five tries against the Panthers in the last two years.

For the season, McDermott has eight goals, second on the team to Jane Skavlem.

Two of McDermott's markers came earlier this week in a 3-1 win over previously unbeaten Drury.
