Mount Greylock Pulls Away from Lenox in Second Half
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Mount Greylock scored six goals in the second half to beat Lenox, 7-1.
It was a dominant performance from start to finish for Mount Greylock, which moved to 11-0-1 on the season and kept its unbeaten streak alive. From the opening whistle, Mount Greylock controlled possession and kept the ball in the attacking third throughout the game.
The Mounties showed great patience as they looked to break down the Lenox defense. Their ability to switch play and attack from both flanks helped them keep the pressure on. The only thing missing early on was a goal. During the first 20 minutes, Mount Greylock unleashed a barrage of shots from outside the box that either went over the crossbar or were saved comfortably by the keeper.
It wasn’t until the 23rd minute that Mount Greylock finally broke through, when Nora Lopez received a ball up the sideline, cut inside, and fired a shot past the keeper. Mount Greylock had one more big chance before halftime, but the Lenox defense made a goal-line clearance to keep it 1-0 at the break.
“I thought we played well in terms of moving the ball with two touches, but we just weren’t sharp in the final third,” Mount Greylock coach Blair Dils said. “We talked about being persistent and keeping the ball low on the keeper, and not just playing through balls but passing to feet. Once we do that, we can create good scoring opportunities.”
The second half was filled with goals as Mount Greylock wasted no time extending the lead. In the 41st minute, a shot from outside the box was tipped aside but finished by Adele Low to make it 2-0. Five minutes later, the Mounties struck again, this time from a Lopez corner kick headed in by Tanley Drake at the back post to make it 3-0.
Mount Greylock scored two more goals within the next five minutes. The first came from Low, who ripped a low shot from outside the box that slipped under the keeper’s dive. The next was from GG Nicastro, who finished calmly after receiving an Arianna Henderson pass from the byline to make it 5-0.
Lenox’s bright moment came in the 60th minute, when they strung together several passes to go clear on goal before being taken down in the box for a penalty. Jane Elliot converted the kick to claim a consolation goal.
Mount Greylock tacked on two more late goals: one in the 68th minute from Maeve Madrigal and another in the 78th from Ruby Morin. It was a complete performance from the Mounties, who even saw contributions from younger players.
“It’s great for the young girls to gain confidence in a varsity game like this, especially with a couple of them getting their first varsity goals, like Ruby Morin and Maeve Madrigal,” Dils said. “It’s exciting and it helps our team depth as we head into the postseason.”
With three games left in the regular season, Mount Greylock will look to keep the unbeaten run going when they face Longmeadow on Monday.
Lenox will look to regroup against Taconic on Tuesday.
