Drury's Meehan Victorious at Central/Western Mass Meet

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Drury senior Connor Meehan won the 800 meter run on Saturday at the Central/Western Massachusetts Division 2 Track and Field Championships.
 
Meehan, who is headed to Xavier University to run cross country and track and field, won his only event of the day with a time of 1 minute, 58.29 seconds, more than two seconds ahead of runner-up Derek Burrows of Oakmont, who finished in 2:00.47.
 
Mount Greylock junior Owen Brandriss placed sixth in the event with a time of 2:02.35, helping the Mounties finish ninth among 44 teams scoring in the sectional meet.
 
Mount Greylock was the highest-placing Berkshire County boys team with 22 team points.
 
The event was won by Oakmont with 57 points to edge Ayer-Shirley (45).
 
Wahconah placed 16th with 18, and Monument Mountain was 25th with 12. Meehan’s 10 points for the win were enough to put Drury in 28th place in the team standings.
 
Mount Greylock’s boys got a second-place finish from Cameron Castonguay in the 400. His time of 51.65 seconds was just behind winner Noah Malo of Monson, who crossed the line in 51.32.
 
Jesse Seid medaled in the 2-mile run for Mount Greylock, placing eighth with a time of 10:36.02. Hopedale’s Brandon Hall won that event in 9:40.21.
 
The Mounties earned points in two relays.
 
In the 4-by-800, Brandriss joined Jacob Adams, Ric Donati and Sam Culver to finish fifth in 8:29.28. Oaklmont won that event in 8:18.23.
 
Donati, who on Thursday gave Mount Greylock points in the pentathlon, also ran on the school’s eighth-place mile relay. Donati, Theo Sandstrom, Dillon Whitley and Castonguay finished in 3:37.31. Mahar won that relay in 3:32.23.
 
Wahconah got a runner-up finish from Matthew Lighten in the 100. He ran a time of 11.13 but could not catch Oakmont’s John Caouette (10.95). Lighten was eighth in the 200, where Caouette also was the victor in 22.34.
 
Sean Harvey of Wahconah finished second in the 110 hurdles, losing by just eight hundredths of a second to Whitinsville’s Mark Bekhet (15.52). Harvey also medaled in the 400 hurdles, placing eighth in a time of 1:00.59; Athol’s Mason Barrieau won the event in 57.52.
 
Monument Mountain’s Matt Weston had a strong day in the sprints, finishing third in the 200 (22.81) and eighth in the 100 (11.67).
 
Spartan senior Dan Newey was sixth in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 10 inches on a day when Maynard’s Mike Ford took gold with a jump of 6-4. Newey’s teammate Jordan Piepho medaled in the javelin with a best throw of 148-6 to finish seventh; West Boylston’s Flynn Mitchell won with a throw of 175-2.
