Athletes of the Week: Hunt & Bohl

Allie Hunt
Pittsfield High

Pittsfield senior Allie Hunt made more than 100 saves this fall as the keeper on a soccer team that went 12-7. This winter, she scored eight points per game and grabbed eight rebounds per game on a basketball team that went to the championship game of the Western Massachusetts Division 2 tournament.

But those are not her best sports.

Her best sport is played in the spring, where Hunt is the most feared hitter and one of the best fielders in all of Berkshire County and one of the best players in Western Mass. In Wednesday's 8-1 win over Drury, Hunt went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles — a great day, but not an atypical day for the PHS shortstop.

Hunt is hitting an eye-popping .556 at the plate this spring, leading the Generals to a 19-1 regular season record. For her career, she is hitting .467 with 90 RBIs, 25 doubles, 17 triples and eight home runs.

"It has been a pleasure to coach this caliber of a player and student-athlete," Pittsfield coach Greg Marchbanks said this week.

Charlie Bohl
McCann Tech

McCann Tech baseball coach Pat Ryan admits he is a little biased when he calls Charles Bohl III, "the best catcher in our league."

But Bohl has the numbers to back up that assertion.

Bohl is hitting a team-best .469 on a Hornets squad that posted a 16-4 record and won the Tri-County League Championship. He has four doubles, 15 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.

He also is a difference-maker behind the plate. He has allowed just five passed balls in more than 120 innings of work, and he has thrown out 32 percent (12 of 37) players who have attempted to steal bases against him.

Bohl has been more effective than that in league play. The overall numbers are skewed by a nonleague game against Hoosac Valley when the Hurricnes were successful in seven of nine attempts. That means in the other 19 games, Bohl threw out 10 of 28 baserunners, a 35 percent success rate.

In Wednesday's win over Pathfinder at Joe Wolfe Field, Bohl threw out two runners who attempted to advance on balls in the dirt to help secure a one-run victory that clinched the league championship.
