Mount Everett Places Second at Mountie Invitational

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Diego Cruz and Tyler Candelari won individual titles Saturday to lead the Mount Everett wrestling team to a second-place finish in the 30th Mountie Invitational at Mount Greylock Regional School.
 
Cruz earned a first-period pin over Pathfinder’s Taran Prak in the championship bout at 106 pounds, capping a four-pin day.
 
Candelari stopped Gateway’s Lucas Gilbert at 2 minutes, 10 seconds of their 126-pound final. Candelari picked up three pins in his three matches.
 
The Eagles finished just five points behind team champion Chicopee Comprehensive, which did not win an individual title but put four wrestlers in championship bouts.
 
Mount Everett’s Connor Lupiani (113) and Omar Cruz (138) each reached the finals but lost on points.
 
The host Mounties placed third out of 20 teams, six points behind Mount Everett.
 
Mount Greylock’s lone finalist was Aiden MacPherson, who used a pair of pins to reach the final at 160 before he was stopped in the first round by Taconic’s Noah Poirier.
 
Two Mounties placed third on their home mats.
 
At 220, Jayquan Vazquez pinned New Lebanon-Berlin’s Nicholas Mosher 1:43 into their final.
 
Mount Greylock heavyweight Hunter Marceau went 2-1 on the day before his opponent in third-place bout took an injury forfeit.
 
In addition to Poirier, Taconic got a title from Jake Hall at 182. He stopped Chicopee Comp’s Dimonie Bermudez just 27 seconds into their final.
 
The Thunder, with a couple of its mainstays sitting out the tournament, placed ninth.
