Taconic's Powell, Burke Earn Third at All-State Wrestling Meet

DANVERS, Mass. -- Taconic's Zabion Powell and Dylan Burke each placed third on Saturday at the All-State Wrestling Championships at St. John's Prep.
 
Burke, who started his Saturday in the championship semi-finals, battled back after suffering a third-round pin against Brookline's Abraham Spurlock to win two matches.
 
In his first consolation bracket bout at 182 pounds, Burke earned his second win of the weekend against Haverill's Joe Santoro.
 
He had pinned Santoro in their opening round match on Friday. Saturday, Burke took a 10-8 decision with a takedown and near fall with 38 seconds left in the third period to erase an 8-6 deficit.
 
In the third-place match, Burke pinned Holliston's Spencer Fetrow at the six-minute mark to earn the bronze.
 
Powell won three times on Saturday, all by decision and two by the slimmest of margins at 145 pounds.
 
In his first match of the day, Powell used a third-period escape to earn a 1-0 win over Nashoba's Lucien Perla.
 
He then posted a 13-8 decision over Mohammad Lofti of King Phillip to reach the third-place match.
 
In his final bout of the afternoon, Powell picked up two points with a first-period takedown and earned an escape in the second period against Dracut's Devin Lambert. Lambert got a takedown late in the third, but Powell emerged with the 3-2 win.
 
Taconic ended up with 45 team points, tying Danvers for 14th place in the 91-team field.
 
The team champion was Division 1 Springfield Central, which earned 171 points to easily outdstance runner-up Central Catholic (78.5 points).
