Ross Leads Mount Greylock Girls to Pair of Dual Meet Wins
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Running as fast as you can on a slick surface can be tricky.
Now try doing it while recovering from an injury that kept you on the sidelines much of the fall and winter.
That was the situation facing Mount Greylock's Madison Ross on Friday at Williams College, and she rose to the challenge, winning three events to help the Mounties pick up a pair of wins in a three-way dual meet against Monument Mountain and Wahconah.
"It was OK," Ross said. :I was just very nervous because I'm coming back from an injury, and I was stressing about it. I was scared I was going to slip. But overall, I did pretty well, and I'm proud of myself."
On the track, Ross won the 100 meters in 12.90 seconds, finishing six-tenths of a second ahead of the field.
In the 200, she was .4 seconds faster than teammate Maddie Albert, finishing in 27.5.
In the field, Ross won the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 inches, and the long jump, going 15-4, nearly two feet ahead of the field.
Not a bad early spring performance for an athlete who was hampered by injury throughout the soccer and basketball seasons.
"It's almost 100 percent healed," she said. :It still bothers me, especially when I do high jump. But whenever it starts to hurt, I just have to take it easy and stretch, and hopefully it will feel better."
Her points helped Mount Greylock post a 99-42 win over Monument Mountain and a 106-35 win over Wahconah. Monument's girls defeated Wahconah, 80-61.
Mount Greylock's boys also went 2-0 in the twilight meet.
The Mounties bettered Monument Mountain, 116.5-24.5 and Wahconah, 83-58. Wahconah's boys picked up a 95-46 win over Monument Mountain.
Mount Greylock's Josh Cheung was a double-winner, taking first in the mile (4:47.3) and the 3,200 (10:29.1).
Monument Mountain's William Riviere won the high jump, clearing 5-8.
Wahconah got a pair of wins from Matt Lighten, who posted a 10.8 in the 100 and a 22.3 in the 200. Lighten also made up a deficit in the final leg of the 4-by-100 relay to give his team a narrow victory over Mount Greylock, 46.1 to 46.4.
Afterward, Lighten indicated the uneasonable cold was at least as much of a factor as the steady rain.
"It's really hard to stay warm," he said. "I came into the day wearing sweat pants, wearing a hat, wearing gloves -- just trying to stay warm and trying to stretch whenever I can."
Wahconah's girls got a win and a second place finish from Victoria Gamberoni, who took first in the two-mile run (12:06.0) and second in the mile (5:30.0). Monument Mountain's girls won the day's final girls event on the track, the 4-by-400 relay, in 4:37.3.
