Mount Greylock Boys, Girls Repeat at Western Mass

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Another year, another pair of Western Massachusetts Championships for the Mount Greylock Regional School track and field program.

Katherine Goss won a pair of events and placed third in another on Saturday to lead the Mounties’ past the field by more than 100 points in the regional championship meet.

Mount Greylock’s boys, meanwhile, got wins from Rafael Mellow-Bartels, Ward Bianchi and Noah Klompus to finish 35 points ahead of runner-up Frontier.

For the boys, it was a fourth straight Western Mass title and seventh since 2018.

Mount Greylock’s girls won their third straight title and fifth since 2018.

A year after winning the girls crown by 76 points and then graduating a sizable senior class, the Mounties came back stronger than ever, amassing 169.5 points to runner-up Frontier’s 67.

Goss said that the team did not know for sure going into the season that it would be able to repeat its dominating performance from a year ago.

“We kind of knew we had some really good girls still,” she said. “We’ve always been strong in depth. We’ve always had young people coming in. We knew we would have some good people, still, but it wasn’t gonna be as strong as last year.”

On Saturday, Mount Greylock’s girls were stronger than the team that springboarded from a Western Mass title to a Division 6 State Championship in 2024.

Goss, who recently was named Berkshire County’s MVP on the girls side, was a big reason why, taking first in the 100 hurdles and the triple jump.

She finished third in the 400 hurdles, where she was edged by county rival Kathryn Perrone of Wahconah by .05 seconds. Perrone finished second to South Hadley’s Maggie Crawford, who ran the ninth-fastest time in the event in the commonwealth this season.

“It was a little hard having the second event, the 400 hurdles, while it was pouring,” Goss said with a laugh. “I wasn’t super happy with that one. But for the rest of my events, I was very happy with how I did. I felt like I left it all out there in the 100 hurdles and the triple jump.

“[The 400 hurdles] was a hard race. I was going against two super fast girls. We were all seeded within half a second of each other. It was a hard race, but we all did pretty good.”

Mount Greylock’s girls also got wins from Brenna Lopez in the 2-mile run and Nora Lopez in the javelin. The pair teamed with Vera De Jong and Cornelia Swabey to win the 4-by-800 relay for the Mounties.

Mount Greylock’s boys, meanwhile, got a win in the 2-mile run from Rafael Mellow-Bartels to open the meet on the track. Ward Bianchi won the javelin and Noah Klompus won the pole vault after finishing second in the meet last spring.

Klompus also placed second in the 200 meters, chasing the other Berkshire County Track and Field MVP, Taconic’s Elijah Harewood.

Harewood doubled in the 100 and 200 after winning the latter and placing second in the former at last year’s Western Mass meet.

“It was a good race,” Harewood said after winning the 100 in 10.97 seconds. “It’s not a PR, but I’m happy with how it went. It wasn’t the hottest day, but I broke 11 [seconds] in the 100, so I’m happy.

“Last week at Wahconah, that was a really nice meet at the Berkshire Individuals. That was a really good meet, really nice conditions.”

Harewood last Saturday ran a time of 10.90 seconds to win the 100 at the BCI meet.

Other county individuals to win on Saturday in the boys meet included Wahconah’s Lorenzo Lewis in the 400 and Monument Mountain’s Everett Pacheco in the mile.

“I thought I could go faster, but I think, given the conditions, the wind and rain and stuff, I didn’t get the time I wanted, but I’m happy with the win,” Pacheco said. “Leading up to it, it’s hard to stay positive and stay motivated and toe the line.

“We cleared up a little bit before the race went off, which was nice, but it definitely hurts for sure.”

Pacheco, a junior and the reigning Division 3 State Champion in cross country, on Saturday only ran the mile but said he plans to run both the mile and 2-mile at next weekend’s Division 5 State Championships at Westfield State.

Berkshire County took nine titles in the girls meet on Saturday.

In addition to Mount Greylock’s wins, Monument Mountain took home a pair of golds, from Polly Geddes in the 400 and Amelia Desilets in the mile.

Wahconah’s Mia Chaffee won the shot put, and Lenox’s Elyssa Scrimo won the 800.

In one sense, the Mount Greylock student-athletes scored the biggest win of the year, finally competing on their own campus after the school district spent years talking about building a track and field complex to serve its largest interscholastic sport.

“It meant so much this year to be able to come and compete on our own track and have people come here – especially having Western Mass here, it’s such a big meet,” Goss said. “It’s nice to win on our own track.”
