BUCKLAND, Mass. -- Mia VanDeurzen and Hannah Gilooly battled to a 7-6, 6-2 win at second doubles Thursday as the Mount Greylock girls tennis team defeated Mohawk Trail, 3-2, in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament.

The Mounties swept the doubles points as Emma Stankiewicz and Orianna Van Slycke earned a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Ninth-seeded Mount Greylock (7-6) also got a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles from Isabel Northington to set up a date in the quarter-finals against top-seeded South Hadley (16-4).

“From a winless season to a tournament win feels good,” Mount Greylock coach John Jacobbe said. “Isabel obviously was a big help, giving us a legitimate No. 1, but 1 to 7, everyone has improved, and we have no seniors.

“So we have a chance to keep improving -- now getting a taste of tournament play.”
