PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Monument Mountain swim team showed its spirit, the Pittsfield Generals showed improvement, and the Spartans came out with a pair of wins at the Boys and Girls Club on Tuesday.

Zoe Holmes won a pair of events, and the Monument Mountain girls earned a key 1-2 finish in the 100-yard butterfly to take a 52-42 dual meet win.

In the boys meet, Tomas Ceola, Quinn Dillon and Vincent Dragonetti each picked up two wins to lead the Spartans to a 57-29 win.

“This team is very interconnected,” Monument Mountain coach Jill Svirida said. “They love each other. We have kids from four different schools and some home-schooled kids who live in our district. These kids did not know each other, six weeks ago, a lot of them. And they're very connected. They do it all for each other.

“Their team spirit and their drive to support each other and to swim their best for each other is what I think got us to where we ended up today.”

A back-and-forth girls meet swung the Spartans’ way for good midway through, when Zoe Holmes and Adalyn Shufelt finished 1-2 in the butterfly to open a 24-17 lead.

“Adelyn Shufelt getting second in the butterfly, that was a huge, huge turning point,” Svirida said. “That's only the second time she's swum that event in her life.

“I didn't expect her to necessarily get second, and I thought we'd be trading it back and forth the whole meet like we had up until that point.”

Shufelt edged Pittsfield’s Riley Steinman by two seconds, but the Pittsfield senior turned things around later in the meet.

“Riley Steinman had a tough butterfly, but she came back,” Pittsfield coach Jim Harrington said. “She was nervous about the backstroke, and she came back to win the backstroke. That's senior leadership that stands out.

“Kiera Devine has been nursing an injury, not swimming the same yardage that she has in the past. She came in and had two big wins (200 free and 500 free). Jackie Roccabruna had two big wins (50 free and 100 free).

“They did what they could do. They came through where they could come through.”

While those seniors were picking up wins for the Generals, their newcomers also were proving themselves.

“We had seven of those girls who had never swam a meet before this season,” Harrington said. “Considering the novice level that some of those girls were at when they started four weeks ago, to where they were able to race legitimate races today … I'm psyched, and I'm looking forward to the next time we meet [Monument Mountain]. And I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Joseph Kearns figured into both Pittsfield’s first-place finishes on Tuesday. He won the 100 freestyle and swam a leg on the Generals’ winning 200 free relay quartet.

Like Harrington, Svirida was happy with the efforts she saw that did not necessarily translate into wins.

“I told the girls, wherever the chips fall, they fall,” she said. “We already won because you are swimming so beautifully. That's what we've been focusing on.

“We've had so much sickness this season. It's been a huge struggle for the kids to be able to practice. The fact that they can get in and look how they looked [strong with] the technical things that we focus on so much. Kids are doing flip turns who had not been previously able to do flip turns -- boys and girls.”
