BUCKLAND, Mass. – Sam St. Peter earned his third pin of the day in the last bout of the night to give the Monument Mountain wrestling team a second-place finish at the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Championships at Mohawk Trail Regional High School.

St. Peter pinned Northampton’s Quane Randall in the first minute of their championship match at 285 pounds.

That gave St. Peter’s Spartans 156 team points, one point ahead of third-place Taconic in the team standings.

Hampden Charter won the team title with 172 points after taking home three individual titles, most by any team at the sectional meet.

Mount Everett, which sent five wrestlers to the first-place bouts, took a pair of titles. Diego Cruz got a second-period pin at 106, and Tyler Candelari pinned Taconic’s West Dews in the second period of their 126 final.

Those wins helped the Eagle place fourth in the 16-team field.

Candelari’s win also came in one of three championship bouts to feature a pair of Berkshire County grapplers.

Monument Mountain’s Colin Kinne earned the Spartans first title of the finals at 113 with an 11-2 win over Mount Everett’s Connor Lupiani.

Taconic’s Noah Poirier gave the Thunder its only individual title in a 10-4 win over Mount Greylock’s Aiden MacPherson in the 160 final.

MacPherson’s run to the finals helped the Mounties finish the meet in the top half of the field with 104 points.

The county was well represented with the Spartans, Thunder and Eagles finishing in the top four of the team standings and 12 local wrestlers reaching finals in the 14 weight classes.

The top four finishers at the sectional meet advance to next weekend’s Division 3 State Championships at Wakefield High School.
