GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Last spring, Chase Doyle batted .295 and went 5-1 on the mound for the Mount Greylock baseball team in the Mounties’ State Championship run.

This spring, he made the jump to track and field.

On Thursday, he jumped his own height.

Doyle cleared 6 feet to win the high jump, one of his two wins on the day, as Mount Greylock earned a 118-22 win over Monument Mountain.

The Mounties’ girls also won their dual meet against the Spartans, 102-39, behind a 100 meter/200 meter sweep from Maggie Nichols, a hurdle sweep from Katherine Goss and wins in the shot put and discus from Lily Catelotti.

Both Mount Greylock teams improved to 2-0 in duals this spring. Last year, each team finished 6-0 in the Berkshire County League.

An already powerful boys squad picked up a nice addition in Doyle, who also won the 110 hurdles on Thursday and ran legs on the Mounties’ uncontested 4-by-100 and 4-by-400 relays.

He said he is enjoying the competition and camaraderie in the track program.

“Baseball, last summer, didn’t exactly go the way I wanted it to,” Doyle said after setting a personal record in the high jump. “I just wanted to try something fun my senior year.

“I went to a few meets last year, saw the environment and absolutely loved it. It’s great people, great people to be around. I knew I’d have fun and be with people I like.”

Outside of phys ed class, Doyle said he had never participated in any track and field activities before transitioning from basketball to spring sports last month. He did not even have a preference for what disciplines he would land in.

“Coach [Brian] Gill and coach [Mike] Blair just told me, ‘This is what you’re going to do,’ “ the Mounties' senior said.

“It’s been very difficult [to learn]. I’m making my body move in ways it doesn’t want to move.”

Mount Greylock’s boys took first in place in all but one event on Thursday.

The exception came in the 3200, where Everett Pacheco earned five points for the Spartans with a 12-second win.

Monument Mountain’s girls had more success, taking first in six events, but Mount Greylock’s depth proved too much to overcome.

The Spartans took three wins in the distance events, where Polly Geddes won the 800, Rae Geddes won the 1600 and Amelia Desilets won the two-mile.

In addition to her individual wins, Mount Greylock’s Nichols ran a leg on one of her team’s victorious relays, filling the anchor spot on the meet-ending 4-by-400.

Catelotti’s PR in the discus highlighted a dominant performance by the Mounties in the throws, where they swept the points in the discus and javelin and took first and second in the shot put.

In addition to the Mounties and Spartans, Thursday’s meet featured track athletes from Mount Everett. Ben Vella placed sixth in the boys mile (5 minutes, 33.81 seconds), and Shira Sawyer placed sixth in the girls 800 (3:19.71) to highlight the Eagles’ day.

Weather permitting, the throwers, jumpers and distance runners from around the county will converge at Williams College on Saturday for the league’s Distance Series.
