Monument Mountain Pair Win Western Mass Doubles Title

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Monument Mountain's Carly Sharfiroff and Haley Higgins won the Western Massachusetts doubles championship over the weekend at Smith College.
 
Sharfiroff and Higgins in the finals defeated Ludlow's Emma Gomes and Marian Goncalves, 7-6, 6-3.
 
The Spartan pair was seeded fifth in the tournament.
 
The doubles draw also included Ashley Kerzner and Shelby Tinker of Mount Everett, who won one match before bowing out in the second round to the tourney's top seed, Minnechaug's Christine Mayotte and Sara Salerna.
 
In singles action, Monument's Cara Freadman won two matches to reach the quarter-finals. Freadman was the tournament's fourth-seeded player. She defeated Minnechaug's Ester Kriz, 6-1, 6-3, and and East Longmeadow's Amanda Hill, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to Longmeadow's Suzanne Elfman, 6-3, 6-2.
 
In the Western Mass boys individuals tournament, Monument's Kadin Sharfiroff reached the quarter-finals as the tournament's fifth seed. He beat South Hadley's Connor Barbacki, 6-1, 6-4, in the third round but was ousted by Longmeadow's Jeff Mueller, 6-4, 6-1.
 
Monument's Jack White and Kevin Costello reached the quarter-finals of the boys doubles tournament.
