Lenox Prevails as Pittsfield Returns to Golf

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – For Pittsfield High senior golfer Jason Fields, Monday was a win before anyone teed off.

 

For Fields, just getting to wear the color purple was a plus.

 

“I love it,” Fields said after finishing his round at the Country Club of Pittsfield. “I mean, I go to PHS. I really don’t like Taconic.”

 

But it was a Taconic green and gold and Fields wore the last couple of autumns as the Generals joined the Thunder in a cooperative team.

 

This year, the city once again has two varsity squads.

 

And while Monday’s opener did not go exactly to plan as Lenox earned a 184-201 win, there was still plenty to be happy about for Pittsfield.

 

“It’s just a crosstown rival in every other sport,” Fields said. “Baseball – I just want to beat them. This fall, I want to beat ‘em twice, here and there, especially not that it’s my old team. I just want to go right back at them and beat them.”

 

He will have to wait until Sept. 11 for that opportunity, when the Thunder opens the home-and-home series on the Generals’ home course.

 

Yesterday, the front nine at the Country Club of Pittsfield belonged to the Millionaires (1-0), who placed five of their seven golfers in the 40s.

 

Lenox’s Katie Shove edged teammate Oliver Kirby for medalist honors, carding a 44 to lead the way.

 

“My drive was pretty good,” Shove said. “My short game was a little bit rough, but we got it done.

 

“It’s always nice to get out for the first match. … Playing golf is one of my favorite sports. To come out there is awesome.”

 

Mia Freeman (47) and Edmund Pritchard (48) rounded out the scoring for Lenox, which plays its home opener at Wyndhurst on Thursday against Taconic High.

 

Fields and Matt Keegan are two of a handful of Pittsfield High students who played for Taconic last fall and are teeing it up for the Generals this year.

 

Fields said he encouraged other PHS students to pursue the sport.

 

“Pretty much last summer [2025], I got a bunch of the baseball guys playing,” he said. “They didn’t think they were ready yet, so they didn’t play last [fall]. But this year, they played all summer at [Berkshire Hills] with me. We came here the end of July and started working, and now we’re here.

 

“I got the guys to play, and it feels great.”

 

Pittsfield will be home again on Wednesday when it takes on Mount Greylock.
