Mount Greylock's McDermott Wins Eastern Championship

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Mount Greylock Regional School junior Quinn McDermott was the top indivdual at the New England Nordic Ski Association's Eastern High School Championships over the weekend at the Rikert Outdoor Center.
 
McDermott compiled 684 points in the three-race event, finishing nine points ahead of runner-up Benjamin Condit of Maine.
 
On Saturday, McDermott won the 7.5-kilometer classic race with a time of 23 minutes, 13.1 seconds, edging New Hampshire's Oliver Wilson (23:16.2).
 
He also placed fourth in a sprint event on Saturday, finishing in 4:27.7 in an event won by Vermont's Sage Grossi in 4:19.4.
 
On Friday, McDermott finished third in the 5K freestyle race, crossing the line in 12:18.4. Vermont's Baxter Harrington won that race in 12:05.0.
 
He closed the meet by skiing a leg on Massachusetts' top-finishing relay quartet, which placed sixth in a 52-team field.
 
McDermott's Mountie teammate Foster Savitsky placed 15th in the individual standings for the weekend, with his best performance a 12th-place finish in the freestyle.
 
Mount Greylock's Annie Miller was the top finishing local girl at the championships, placing 37th in a 107-racer field. Lenox's Alice Culver was 73rd, Wahconah's Vienna Mahar was 82nd, Lenox's Rudzinskaite Medeja was 90th. Wahconah's Skylar Rosier competed in one event, the sprint.
 
Wahconah's Fritz Sanders placed 70th in the 109-boy field in the overall standings. Mount Greylock's Declan Rogers and Jude Bakija placed 74th and 84th, respectively. Mountie Oliver Swabey placed 18th in the 7.5K classice, the only event in which he competed.
