WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Derek Paris hit a grand slam, and Jackson Shelsy hit a walkoff single in the eighth to give the Mount Greylock baseball team a 9-8 win over Mount Everett on Tuesday.

The Mounties appeared to take command when Paris crushed a ball to the deepest part of the outfield with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. He raced around the bases for an inside-the-park slam and gave his team an 8-3 lead.

But the Eagles stormed back with five in the top of the seventh, which featured a two-run double by Michael Ullrich.

The Mounties got the winning run to third base with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but Cooper Rothvoss got the third out on a ground ball to third to force extra innings.

After Shelsy stranded the go-ahead run at third in the top of the eighth, Jack Gitterman led off the bottom of the frame with a single to center. Thomas Martin’s single put Gitterman in scoring position, and Shelsy drove him home with a single to left.

“The team didn’t hesitate,” Mount Greylock coach Rick Paris said. “Once the run scored, they all chased down Jackson out on the field after he rounded first base to celebrate the hit. It was awesome to see.

“Being on the winning end of close games, it doesn’t get any better”

Shelsy went 2-for-5 with a double at the plate and threw two innings in relief of Chase Doyle to earn the win on the mound. Doyle struck out five and allowed four earned runs in six innings of work.

Rothvoss took the loss with 1-⅔ innings in relief of Hunter DeGrenier for the Eagles.

Rothvoss also went 3-for-4 with a double, and Jack Carpenter was 2-for-3 with a double in the loss.

Mount Everett goes to Lenox on Friday.

Mount Greylock (7-2) hosts Wahconah on Friday.
