Pittsfield Opens Season with Road Win
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Simon Mele went 3-for-3 with a home run Thursday to power the Pittsfield baseball team to a 7-2, season-opening win over Pope Francis.
Jason Codey struck out six and allowed no hits in 4 and two-thirds innings on the mound to earn the win.
"Codey was in complete control of the game, giving up no hits," Pittsfield coach Drew Pearce said. "Only reason I took him out is due to a pitch count early in the season."
Cam Hillard and Matt Egan finished up on the bump, combining to strike out four.
The Generals took a 1-0 lead in the second when Mele scored on a passed ball after reaching on a single.
In the fourth, Mele homered to left to drive in Morrie Fried and John Mullen to give Pittsfield a 4-0 lead.
The Generals (1-0) are home on Buddy Pellerin Field at Clapp Park on Saturday afternoon against Monument Mountain.
