PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Jay Codey struck out seven and scattered four hits in six innings of work Sunday as the top-seeded Pittsfield High baseball team opened the Division 3 State Tournament with a 6-2 win over Pembroke on Buddy Pellerin Field at Clapp Park.

Morrie Fried hit a solo home run, and Cam Hillard went 2-for-3 to lead the Generals’ offense, which got two runs batted in from Kevin Smith.

Pittsfield broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and led, 6-0, going to the seventh inning.

“Codey was dominant even when he didn’t have his best stuff against a very strong Pembroke team,” Pittsfield coach Drew Pearce said. “Fried got us going with a solo home run and Hillard and Smith kept the offense going. We will focus on the Round of 16 Wednesday starting at practice tomorrow.”

Pittsfield will face No. 17 Newburyport at a time to be announced.
