LEE, Mass. -- Alyssa Kelly scored on a free position with 30 seconds left in overtime to lead the Lee High girls lacrosse team to a 19-18 win over Hoosac Valley on Friday afternoon.

"We were down by six goals in the second half, and I called timeout and challenged them," Hoosac coach Molly Meczywor said.

It was a one-goal game at half-time before Lee (3-5) scored five straight to take control.

"I said, 'This is a test of your character," Meczywor said. "We responded and scored six goals right away."

Lee pulled ahead again, but Claudia Bressette scored with 1 minute, 40 seconds left in regulation to tie it.

Mikayla DeSantis scored a game-high nine goals to lead the Wildcats, who got six from Kelly and three from Meryl Phair.

Hoosac's Allie Mendel scored six goals with two assists. Holly Cadran and Aubrey Rumbolt each scored four. Audrey Johnson and Ella Suters each had a goal for the Hurricanes (1-5).

"It was a heart-breaker," Meczywor said. "There were a lot of tears afterward.

"But like I told the girls afterward, I'm so proud to be your coach."

Hoosac, which starts a seventh grader, four eighth graders and two freshmen, is starting to play like a varsity program, Meczywor said, and a week that featured a win over Lee, a five-goal loss to powerful Mount Greylock and Friday's OT loss is proof of how far the Hurricanes' program has come.

It really will be tested next week. Thanks to the prolonged winter and a spring season that did not start until April 27, the 'Canes have two double-headers scheduled for next week: on Monday against Pittsfield and on Wednesday at Wahconah.

"We're going to be tired," Meczywor said.
