WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Mount Greylock girls lacrosse team Saturday got off to a fast start, but it really put the game away with a strong finish.

Ainsley Able scored seven goals, and the Mounties outscored Oakmont, 7-1, in the second half to earn a 15-4 win in the Division 4 State Tournament’s Round of 32 on John Allen Field.

“This was our fastest start ever, scoring immediately off the first draw of the game,” Mount Greylock coach Jeff Stripp said. “However, we wouldn't score again until about the 15-minute mark. That stretch was mired with unforced errors, missed feeds and some good hustle plays by Oakmont.

“Our offense was a bit like novocaine today - we just needed a little time for it to settle in - resulting in 53% of our goals being assisted.”

Abel had two of those assists. Sarah Polumbo set up three goals, and Lexi Politis had a pair of assists.

Polumbo and Politis also scored four and two goals, respectively, and Gianna Pesce had a goal and an assist.

Polumbo’s goals included the 100th of the season for the senior standout.

“Stella Waynick did an excellent job today doing the ‘dirty work’ between the restraining lines and chipped in a free position goal of her own,” Stripp said.

Christy Rech made three saves to earn the win between the pipes, and Nina Wied and Annie Coody did a good job filling in for a pair of missing defensive starters, Stripp said.

Eighth-seeded Mount Greylock (19-2) is home in the Sweet 16 on Tuesday against No. 9 Cape Cod Academy (11-8), a 20-4 winner over Martha’s Vineyard on Friday.
