SHEFFIELD, Mass. – The Mount Everett softball team opened up a close game with an eight-run fourth inning en route to a 13-1 win over Springfield Central on Tuesday.

Makayla Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs to spark the offense.

Emma Goewey went 2-for-3 and scored three times. Alyiah Creamer drew four walks and scored twice.

The Eagles made the most of seven hits in putting away Central in five innings.

Mount Everett coach Joshua King said he liked his team’s composure in the season opener.

“I think in years past we fold under pressure or let little mistakes get to us, but today I saw a different group of girls who handled the pressure and came up clutch when we needed it,” King said. “Makayla Carpenter got the rally going in the fourth, and we were able to pull away from that point.”

Julia Devoti and Emily Steuernagle split time in the circle, combining for 10 strikeouts. Steuernagle earned the win with two innings of one-hit scoreless relief.

Mount Everett (1-0) hosts Ludlow on Thursday.
